From Ocean to Tap: Securing San Diego’s Water Supply

The Carlsbad Desalination Plant provides San Diego County with a drought-resilient, local water source; producing up to 54 million gallons per day. This reliable supply helps reduce dependence on imported water and strengthens regional water security.

Advanced reverse osmosis technology transforms Pacific Ocean seawater into clean drinking water. The 10-mile pipeline delivers it directly into the regional system. This process ensures safe, high-quality water for homes, businesses, and communities across the county.

Beyond water supply, the project strengthens the region in many ways. Construction created thousands of jobs and capital projects establish hundreds of new positions in the area. The plant contributes over $5 million in annual tax revenue, boosting local services and the economy. In addition, more than 15 acres of coastal land were set aside for trails, fishing, and public access. This commitment ensures the project benefits both residents and the environment for generations to come.
